Summary

An Effective, Holistic Guide for Teaching Children in Any Educational Setting

Every parent and teacher wants to give his or her children the best education possible。 They hope that the teaching they provide is a joyful adventure, a celebration of life, and preparation for living。 But sadly, most education today falls short of this goal。

For the Children's Sake imagines what education can be based on a Christian understanding of the meaning of life and what it means to be human--a child, a parent, a teacher。 The central ideas have been proven over many years and in almost every kind of educational situation, including ideas that author Susan Schaeffer Macaulay and her husband, Ranald, have implemented in their own family and school experience。 Includes a foreword by daughter and educator Fiona Fletcher。

Simple and Practical: This user-friendly guide helps educators build a stable, enriching, and intellectually stimulating environment for children and also includes a list of additional resources Immersive Teaching: Shows parents and teachers how children's learning experiences can be extended to every aspect of life Proven Methodology: Used in school settings for 14 years, these easily applicable ideas will benefit parents and teachers in homeschooling, public school, or private school

Just wow! Such an inspiring book that brings to life a stirring need to raise my children and educate my children in the best way that I am capable! I am only at the threshold of my homeschool journey, but this book makes me come alive with plans and ideas for how i will create an atmosphere of learning。 I want my children to have a living education like the one described in this book, not one where they are forced into a box but one that allows them the freedom to explore their own personhood a Just wow! Quite disappointed to read principle #2--"Children are not born either good or bad, but with possibilities for good and evil。"Really? What part of a child escapes Original Sin? What part of a child DOESN'T need the redemption offered in Christ? Took a while to read because there is no fluff in this book。 It was read a little - ponder - then come back。 I'm tempted to start it all over again now that I've finished。 Took a while to read because there is no fluff in this book。 It was read a little - ponder - then come back。 I'm tempted to start it all over again now that I've finished。 。。。more

A must read for everyone! Even if you don’t have children (like myself!) it teaches so much about learning, how we learn, how people/children think, how to encourage learning and curiosity, ect。 All from a Christian perspective! Fantastic book! I want to try to read or listen to this every year! It really helped me! I had read some of charlotte mason’s books but had gotten overwhelmed and didn’t know how to apply it in a practical way。 This book helped sooo much in that way!

Overall I enjoyed this attempt to summarize what a Charlotte Mason education looks like in the 20th (and 21st) century。 The passage about corporal punishment was jarring and clashed with the rest of book in my opinion。 If you respect children, you do not hit them。 The author also sounded ignorant when discussing evolution and what a scientific theory was。 She seems to have confused Theory with Hypotheses? Written by Francis Shaeffer’s daughter - and you see the influence of his thinking and teaching in her writing as well。 This introduction to Charlotte Mason’s philosophy on education reminded me of the importance of teaching the whole child and caring for the whole person。 I was encouraged and challenged in every way - from disciplining and discipling to nature studies and read alouds。 I am so looking forward to beginning this homeschooling season with Madi and hope to incorporate what I learned Written by Francis Shaeffer’s daughter - and you see the influence of his thinking and teaching in her writing as well。 This introduction to Charlotte Mason’s philosophy on education reminded me of the importance of teaching the whole child and caring for the whole person。 I was encouraged and challenged in every way - from disciplining and discipling to nature studies and read alouds。 I am so looking forward to beginning this homeschooling season with Madi and hope to incorporate what I learned from this book now。 。。。more

I really liked it, there is so much to take away and put into practice。 I tried to take notes to help me remember, but I will probably have to revisit!

I read this with a book club of other homeschool moms。 It was a perfect solid introduction to Charlotte Mason philosophy of education。 I underlined and starred soooo much of this book! I know I’ll be referencing it a lot as we continue to homeschool and move towards Charlotte Mason education。

Really appreciated this gentle encouragement for family life and homeschooling。

I’ve had this on my shelf for years but just now getting to it! What a lovely and encouraging read。 Something that stands out to me as different about this book compared to other “modern” CM books is the author spends time discussing how to apply Charlotte Mason’s principles in various settings and lifestyles, such as a public/private school environment, homeschool environment, Sunday school, evening and family life。 I was wondering if it’d be repetitive having read many other CM books, but it w I’ve had this on my shelf for years but just now getting to it! In German we would say "Nichts halbes und nichts ganzes。" Nothing half and nothing whole。 The book has hardly any practical advice but also doesn't go deep enough into the theory of Charlotte Mason。 It's just a little bit of both。 Really disappointed because everyone seems to praise it as the go to book to learn about Charlotte Mason's method。 It will not leave you empowered to set up a Charlotte Mason education for your students。Also, the chapters are way too long。 In German we would say "Nichts halbes und nichts ganzes。" Nothing half and nothing whole。 The book has hardly any practical advice but also doesn't go deep enough into the theory of Charlotte Mason。 It's just a little bit of both。 Really disappointed because everyone seems to praise it as the go to book to learn about Charlotte Mason's method。 It will not leave you empowered to set up a Charlotte Mason education for your students。Also, the chapters are way too long。 。。。more

This book sets a pretty high bar for both parenting and education using the Charlotte Mason method, a standard which I will never perfectly meet。 But, I love ideas and there are exceptional ones to be found here。 Honestly, there are a handful of practical suggestions that I could implement as a parent-educator。 Will I ever be Charlotte Mason approved? Ha! Never! But thankfully, I don’t need to be。 I can glean from her wisdom and appreciate her standards without striving to recreate a PNEU。 Whew。 This book sets a pretty high bar for both parenting and education using the Charlotte Mason method, a standard which I will never perfectly meet。 But, I love ideas and there are exceptional ones to be found here。 Honestly, there are a handful of practical suggestions that I could implement as a parent-educator。 Will I ever be Charlotte Mason approved? Beautifully written and well structured expression of Charlotte Masons philosophy of a living education。 I especially appreciated the line “if you can’t give them everything, give them something” - a realistic approach to trying to give children the best education and start to life we can。 None of this book felt exclusive or aimed at only those with time and capacity for homeschooling, people from many walks of life could adapt it easily。 Highly recommend。

I don’t consider myself a Charlotte Mason devotee but I really enjoyed this book and found many helpful gems of information。 Particularly her focus on the necessity of nature and free play outside as a vital part of a child’s education。 This book made me so thankful for the freedom to homeschool my children and adjust curriculum to best match the needs of each of our individual children。

I enjoyed learning about Charlotte Mason's approach to homeschooling。 This book was written in the 1980s but a large portion still applies today。 I'm curious if more would be said about technology。 I enjoyed learning about Charlotte Mason's approach to homeschooling。 This book was written in the 1980s but a large portion still applies today。 I'm curious if more would be said about technology。 。。。more

A great introduction to the Charlotte Mason way of learning。 Now, on to volume six (“A Philosophy of Education”) of Ms。 Mason’s own series。

I enjoy re-reading this year after year and always recommend it to friends who are disenchanted with the public school system。

Amazing book would help any person working or helping children。 Whatever you are in life, if there are children in your life this book can teach you many things to help guide you and them honorably and rightfully。

I gifted this book to a friend and then read it as she was reading it so that we could compare notes。 It has a lot of things to consider and I wish I had come across it earlier in my parenting career。 The author takes the works and ideas of Charlotte Mason and applies an extra Christian/biblical approach to schooling one's children。 I am ever grateful for Charlotte Mason's reminding us that children come with a intellect, it is not something that is given to them through their education and they I gifted this book to a friend and then read it as she was reading it so that we could compare notes。 It has a lot of things to consider and I wish I had come across it earlier in my parenting career。 The author takes the works and ideas of Charlotte Mason and applies an extra Christian/biblical approach to schooling one's children。 I am ever grateful for Charlotte Mason's reminding us that children come with a intellect, it is not something that is given to them through their education and they needed to be treated as being with an intellect and not as stupid, empty vessels。 I really appreciated much of what she has to offer here and I will likely gift it to others who are seeking guidance in schooling their children。 There were far too many long quotes for me to share but I will offer a few to give you a taste。"Charlotte Mason respected their minds, even as equally capable as her own exceedingly capable mind。 She had her own word, 'twaddle,' for the mentally inferior and useless stuff produced or written for children by adults。 She saw that it devalued their minds。""Charlotte Mason understood that knowing given lists of facts parrot-wise is not even the beginning of education。 She satisfied the minds of young persons with substantial, interesting, well-written material that they could think about。 She let them enjoy beauty in nature, writing, art, music, and the Bible as God's word to them。 She left them precious childhood hours free to climb trees, explore woods, walk, ride, and what have you。""In England, when the top 15 percent used to be creamed off and set to top 'academic' schools, one headmaster conducted a small private experiment。 He took a few children, whose test results had actually placed them well below that top group。 Without telling his staff he put them in the elite classes。 Of course, the children and teachers assumed that the tests had projected what sort of person they were - clever and capable。 And those youngsters lived up to what the situation told them they could achieve。""Perhaps the gravest defect in school curricula is that they fail to give a comprehensive, intelligent and interesting introduction to history。 To leave off or even to begin with the history of our own country is fatal。 We cannot live sanely unless we know that other peoples are as we are with a difference, that their history is as ours, with a difference, that they too have their literature and their national life。" -Charlotte Mason 。。。more

I wanted to like this book。 So many people pointed me towards it as we began homeschooling。 I had read some about Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy and loved what I had learned so far。 I thought this book might be a beneficial addition to my understanding。Instead I found it boring, pedantic, elitist, repetitive, and nearly unreadable。 I finally downloaded a free audio version that I used to power through, but even that wasn't enjoyable。 100% would not recommend。 You can find much more int I wanted to like this book。 So many people pointed me towards it as we began homeschooling。 I had read some about Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy and loved what I had learned so far。 I thought this book might be a beneficial addition to my understanding。Instead I found it boring, pedantic, elitist, repetitive, and nearly unreadable。 I finally downloaded a free audio version that I used to power through, but even that wasn't enjoyable。 100% would not recommend。 You can find much more interesting ways of learning about this educational philosophy。 。。。more

By far my favorite book on education so far。 I could not put it down。 The ideas presented, along with Charlotte Mason’s educational ideology, were practical and simple。 I will definitely refer back to this book over our years homeschooling。 Overall the book gave me a greater excitement and encouragement for educating our children, and that’s the best part。 Highly recommend!
